Step1
A Guardian ad litem is a court appointed worker who works for the court or independently from the court. They investigate and report back to the court in regards to all facts relating to the mother, father, children and all parties in involved in the children's lives.

The Guardian will gather and collect school, medical, and counseling records for all parties in the case. The guardian will collect criminal records, social service records, and possible drug tests on all parties.
Step2
The Guardian will interview the parents., children, and any other parties relating to the case. the Guardian will got to the parties homes and make sure they are appropriate.
Step3
The Guardian will gather and collect all of the above and write a written report which will be submitted to the court.

To get a Guardian ad litem appointed to your case you will need to file a motion and request a Judge to do so. Sometimes the Court will conduct the case or sometimes a professional outside of the court will do so at an expense to the parties.
