How do you decide what to do when your job isn't making you happy? Before you quit and end up in another dead-end job, try these simple exercises to help decide which direction to go in.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a list of all the things you love or would really like to know about doing. If you have trouble, take some time during the week and walk around in some places you like that promote thinking about your future. While you're thinking, you may come up with something like "I love working with numbers," or "I'm love teaching people how to work with computers." You can even put things on your list like, "I love walking in places like this."

  2. Step 2

Make a list of all the things you are good at. These are typically skills you have on the job, like "I'm good at numbers," or "I work well in a teaching environment."

  3. Step 3

Compare the lists. Know what you are good at and what you like to do. They're often not the same thing. Some people think if you like something you'll automatically be good at it. In today's world, however, we are often required to learn skills and become good at them for survival. There are a lot of people good at their jobs who don't really like what they do. If you're starting a new career, the options should come from the list that includes both. Once you start comparing your lists, some thing should start to become obvious. Write down all the "categories" you can think of that use words from both lists. Your list may look something like this: Work with numbers, understand technology, the environment is my favorite cause, like to work outside, like to teach kids.

  4. Step 4

Now, go to the Internet. Find your favorite job search site(s). Do searches on the combined list categories. You may be surprised by the types of jobs and careers available to you. You can also do a general search on your favorite search engine and see what else you can discover about how your favorite things can come to life.
