David Letterman
David Letterman

He's got crooked teeth. He's kind of goofy looking yet he's hysterically funny and charming (in a goofy kind of way). He's David Letterman and if you can't sleep without catching his show on late night TV, then you just may be a fan. If you'd like to increase your fandom and learn a little more about the man, well then read this list on the "Top 10 Ways to Be a Fan of David Letterman". (Afterwards, head on over to YouTube for a selection of some of Dave's most wackiest late night moments.)

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • TV
  • Computer access to YouTube
  1. Step 1
    Drew Barrymore dancing for Dave
    Drew Barrymore dancing for Dave

Watch the YouTube video of Drew Barrymore dancing on Dave's desk and flashing him.

It's a night Dave will never forget. In a 1995 "Late Show" appearance, Drew Barrymore famously danced on Letterman's desk for his birthday and briefly bared her breasts with her back to the camera.

The look on Dave's face is absolutely priceless.

  2. Step 2
    Madonna misbehaving with Dave
    Madonna misbehaving with Dave

Head to YouTube and watch another Dave classic as he verbally spars with Madonna.

Madonna proves to be a difficult interview for Dave then gets increasingly belligerent as the interview progresses.

When watching this video, make sure the kiddies are asleep as Madonna drops almost every curse word in the book as Dave more than holds his own.

  3. Step 3
    Dave and Oscar
    Dave and Oscar

Watch the YouTube video of Dave's disastrous hosting of the 1995 Oscars.

It was meant to be the career move of a lifetime, hosting the 1995 Oscars ceremony. It turned out to be the ALMOST end of Dave's career.

    Uma, Oprah. Oprah, Uma, anyone?

  4. Step 4
    Dorothy Letterman's cookbook
    Dorothy Letterman's cookbook

    Read Dave's mom's cookbook.

If you've watched Dave over the years, you know that he truly loves his mom Dorothy. He's had her on the show numerous times and in 1994 he sent her to Lillehammer to be a correspondent for the show from the Olympics. Finally in 1996, he encouraged her to write a cookbook, "Home Cookin' With Dave's Mom".

Read the book and you can learn how to make Dave's favorite meal: Hot Baloney Sandwich and Sour Cherry Pie!

  5. Step 5
    Young Dave
    Young Dave

Scour the web for Dave's stint on Mary Tyler Moore's show. No, not THAT Mary Tyler Moore Show, the one she did AFTERWARDS.

The year was 1978 and MTM was fresh off her long running successful series and wanted to try something different-a variety show. It was called simply, "Mary" and it featured a young struggling comedian named, you guessed it, David Letterman.

If you can find ANY video of that show, you are TRUE Letterman fan!

  6. Step 6
    Dave on Johnny Carson
    Dave on Johnny Carson

Search for clips of Dave's stand up act.

Before Dave was a big time star, he was a struggling comedian. (Actually, Dave's nightly opening monologues are really more polished (and funnier) versions of Dave doing stand up.)

Again, if you can track down these gems, then you my friend, are a true Letterman fan.

  7. Step 7
    A dog saying
    A dog saying

Download Dave's Stupid Pet Tricks from YouTube.

He's shown everything from a hamster bowling to dogs jumping rope. It's Dave's ingenious late night invention, "Stupid Pet Tricks" and over 20 year later it's still a late night classic.

  8. Step 8
    A stupid human trick
    A stupid human trick

Watch Dave's Stupid Human Tricks on YouTube

The human can opener. A guy that can stuff 50 lit cigarettes in his mouth. These are just some of the wacky guests that Dave featured on his show.

If you're a true Dave fan (and if you're brave enough) head on over to YouTube for a small selection of some of humanity's least talented folks.

  9. Step 9
Sonny & Cher together for the last time on Dave
Sonny & Cher together for the last time on Dave

Watch on YouTube as Dave singlehandedly reunites Sonny and Cher in 1987

It was an historic evening in 1987 when Dave surprised Cher by bringing out Sonny Bono and asking them to perform "I Got You Babe". After much hemming and hawing, a reluctant Cher finally gave in.

It was the very last time they performed that song.

  10. Step 10
Dave entertaining the troops in Iraq

Read up on Dave's quiet philanthropy.

Even though he may appear to have a gruff exterior, Dave does actually have a heart (a big one in fact.)

While he doesn't like to have it known, Dave is actually a huge contributor to several animal and children organizations. And most recently, Dave dug deep into his own pockets to pay his staffers during the still ongoing writers strike.

Now, THAT'S the number one reason to be Dave's fan!
