Do you really want to know how to stop sugar cravings? It will take some willpower and perseverance at first, but you really can do it. The rewards are tangible -- you'll feel better and your body will be healthier without sugar and refined starches. Start nourishing your body with the foods it needs and you can more easily figure out how to stop sugar cravings.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Eat a healthy diet that includes good fats such as coconut oil, olive oil and yes, even butter. Your body often craves sugar because you are lacking certain nutrients and fat-soluble vitamins. (Photo: olive oil)
Step2
Replace processed foods and refined starches with whole foods and sprouted (or fermented) breads. However, if you have a yeast problem you will need to cut out wheat products until you restore balance in your body. (Photo: whole grain bread)
Step3
Make sure you are getting enough protein. Adequate protein intake will often stop sugar cravings. Try chicken with steamed veggies and teriyaki sauce as a protein-rich meal. (Photo: Chicken & Veggies)
Step4
Eat an apple or other piece of fruit when your sugar cravings are at their worst. (Photo: Fresh Apples)
Step5
Drink water, and bring water with you to sip, as proper hydration will help stop some sugar cravings. Sometimes, your body's need for water is interpreted as a desire for sugar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Eat a filling meal before grocery shopping, to avoid impulse purchases of sugary snacks.
  • Give up sugar for Lent or other religious observation. Sometimes, having a spiritual goal makes it easier.
  • Bring cashews, carrot sticks and other non-sugary snacks to work.

on 2/5/2008 Some further tips:

-Beware of substituting one addiction for another. If you are still ingesting caffeine or nicotine, sugar cravings can be replaced by increased cravings for those substances (also, alcohol is a sugar).

-Multivitamins are essential. The industrially produced food available at grocery stores is missing a lot of trace minerals that have been over-farmed from the soil. Sugar cravings and other addictions are often largely based in inadequate nutrition. For example, a successful treatment of narcotic addictions has been carefully administered mega-doses of B vitamins and other nutrients.

-Eliminating consumption of all stimulants is healthy, but you will not be able to do as much. It's best to accept this as a trade off, rather than to push yourself to do as much as an over-stimulated person can.

on 2/4/2008 It's so nice when sweets are out of your life. Once you begin to taste them again after being away from them for a while they taste almost sickening with a artificial sweetness to them.
