Bad weather can happen any time and can be threatening to your home and family. Fortunately, being prepared to stay safe in bad weather can be done with in a few simple steps. By paying attention to weather reports and acting quickly, you can help your family to stay safe in bad weather. Follow the steps below in order to protect your family when severe weather strikes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make a plan for your family to meet during bad weather. It is important that everyone in your family know where to meet in case of a weather emergency, in case time is limited. You should have drills occasionally to make sure that it is known exactly where to go and what each member should do.

  2. Step 2

Go to a cellar, basement or other designated area. During a weather emergency, pay close attention to warnings and sirens. As soon as it is suggested that you should move to your safe location, get to your designated area as quickly as possible. A room with few windows and interior walls would be safe if there is not a basement in your home. Stay away from any glass and cover the windows, if you have enough time.

  3. Step 3

  4. Step 4

Have a complete bad weather emergency kit. Any type of waterproof container will suffice in keeping your bad weather emergency items. It is recommended by the Red Cross that you have enough items to last for three days. You'll need to include a manual can opener, pocket knife, several blankets and a set of house and car keys. Make sure that you have non-perishable food and water for three days, as well as any prescriptions, important documents and emergency phone numbers

  5. Step 5

Arrange a back up plan, especially if you have children. There could be a chance that you might not be home at the time of bad weather and you will want your kids to know what to do. Plan for one of your neighbors to call and check up on your children, until you can make it home safely.
