How to Make Diabetic Pizza

Everyone loves pizza. Just because you are a diabetic does not mean that you can no longer enjoy pizza. With a little bit of sauce and turkey sausage, along with special seasonings, you'll have a pizza to drool over and enjoy. The best part is that it will fit well into your diabetic diet.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 11 1/2-inch thin crust Italian bread shell
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 2/3 cup shredded part-skim milk mozzarella cheese
  • 6 oz. turkey sausage
  • 1 small white onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1/2 green bell pepper (chopped)
  • 1/2 red and yellow peppers (chopped)
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed dried basil
  • Crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

    How to Make a Diabetic Pizza.

  1. Step 1

    Crumble the turkey sausage and brown in a skillet. Drain on paper towels and place in a bowl. Do this ahead of time and set aside.

  2. Step 2

    Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Place the shell on an ungreased 12-inch non-stick pizza pan.

  3. Step 3

    Assemble your pizza by spreading the pizza sauce over the shell, leaving a 1-inch border around the rim. Sprinkle with half the cheese.

  4. Step 4

    Arrange the cooked sausage on top of the cheese, covering evenly.

  5. Step 5

    Top with onion and mushroom slices along with chopped green, yellow and red peppers. Sprinkle evenly with oregano, basil and red pepper flakes (if using). Top with remaining cheese.

  6. Step 6

    Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the crust is crisp and the cheese is melted and browned.

  7. Step 7

    Cut into 6 wedges and serve with a salad, low sugar applesauce or coleslaw.

Tips & Warnings
  • By using the green, yellow and orange peppers you are also adding color to the pizza.
  • There are baked potato chips on the market that you can serve alongside this pizza.
