Edgar Allen Poe was one of the best and, at times, scariest writers of the modern age. His ability to creep out his fans and critics extends beyond his time on earth, and continues at his home in Baltimore! The home was taken over by the Poe Society in the 1940's, and visitors and staff there report paranormal events to please the ghost hunter in all of us. Check it out.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Camera

Step1
Before this home housed Edgar Allen Poe and family, it was part of a bigger slum area and rented to families prior to the Poe tenancy. Perhaps one of these past unfortunate spirits is responsible for the mysterious closing of windows and slamming of doors!
Step2
Elizabeth Poe, Edgar's grandmother, may be the culprit for the paranormal events that occur in her old bedroom. Elizabeth died in this room and still makes her presence known by tapping visitors on the shoulder!
Step3
Neighborhood locals have reported seeing the shadow of a man in the attic window. Poe is said to have done most of his writing in the attic during his lifetime. Scary!
Step4
E.A. Poe's grave Need more? Check out the Poe grave site in the nearby cemetery. It is said that on the anniversary of his birth, a strange man leaves three roses and a bottle of cognac on his grave. This has been happening since 1948 and the man has never been identified.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check out the Official Poe House and Museum website to check on hours of operations (see Resources below).
  • Plan ahead and visit during their annual Halloween events!
  • Be respectful in the cemetery. Remember, this is a sacred place.
