shoes
First don't wear shoes on your carpet, the last thing that you want to do is track outside dirt and germs in onto your nice clean carpet.
Step2
carpet
vacuum at least every other day if possible,if not then at least once a week. Otherwise the dirt will build up causing the carpet to look dingy.
Step3
baking soda
Sprinkle baking soda on your carpet every two weeks before vacuuming, this will help remove any odors.
Step4
Steam clean your carpet at least twice a year, anything less is not enough.
Step5
Clean spills up immediately using a mild cleaner such as baking soda, white vinegar, or a commercial product such as spot shot.
Step6
poodle
If you have a pet that goes outdoors always be sure to wipe off his feet before he comes back inside. Some dogs, can even be taught to wipe their own feet on a floor mat.
Step7
Be sure to bath your pet at least every other week with a mild shampoo that won't dry out his skin. Animals especially dogs can get smelly pretty quickly. You can also brush some baking soda through his fur to help with odor.

on 7/16/2008 Arm & Hammer also has scented carpet powders that are really cheap! I like to use those on my carpet.
