Things You'll Need:
- Comprehension
- Calculator
- Computer
- Internet (this is actually optional)
- Envelope / Stamp
- Bank account (only for direct deposit also opt)
- Willingness to read!
-
Step 1
The first thing you must do is go to the irs website.
http://www.irs.gov/app/freeFile/jsp/index.jsp?ck -
Step 2
Next you will need to click on free file on the left, then read the qualifications. If I remember correctly it is 50 thousand or under can frre file. But PLEASE check the site there are a few ifs and buts. (Arent there always?) If your income falls within the range, move on.
-
Step 3
Next you will have to choose one of the tax softwares from a list on the bottom of the page. * Personal Note: I used Liberty's free software for my niece and we got a rejection from the IRS. So choose wisely! I would stick with a large name corporation myself. UPDATE!! My niece checked her birth certificate and we had her birthdate incorrect! Was not a problem with the free Liberty Tax software.
-
Step 4
When you have chosen your course begin to fill in all the blanks on the page. Please remember to submit with all w-2's in hand. Remember to read each page carefully then answer the questions. You may even need to stop by the post office to get tax forms and the instruction booklet.
-
Step 5
Cross all you t's and dot your I's then either submit your online forms or print it and mail it in!

on 12/18/2008 AARP has a place in your town that will do it for free. I usually leave a little something in their box when I'm done. And you don't have to be 55! Thanks for the article
