Things You'll Need:
-
Step 1
Learn the rules of baseball. If all you know is that everybody cheers when someone hits the ball over the fence, chances are you're not going to enjoy watching baseball as much as you would if you had a good working understanding of the whole game.
-
Step 2
Watch baseball with a seasoned fan, who can explain things that don't make sense to you. This is one of the quickest routes you can take to a heightened appreciation of the game of baseball.
-
Step 3
Gain an appreciation of both offensive and defensive aspects of the game. That way, you'll remain interested no matter which team is at bat and which is in the field. Defensive wizardry can be just as exciting to watch as a power hitter at the peak of his game swatting a walk-off game-winning home run.
-
Step 4
Turn on your TV. Absorbing the commentary of the play-by-play announcer and the analyst will help you learn more about how baseball is played, and the incredible skill required to play baseball at a high level. Most modern broadcasts also break down plays after the fact, so you can benefit from professional analysis as you learn more and more about the game itself.
-
Step 5
Follow baseball on sports websites, or in the sports section of your daily newspaper. See what teams are where in the standings, which players lead the league in major offensive and pitching categories and what players and teams you should watch.
-
Step 6
Head to the ballpark. There's nothing quite like watching a good ball game unfold live. Being able to see the entire field at once will also heighten your appreciation and deepen your knowledge of baseball's team principles.
-
Step 7
Have a few beers, some peanuts and a hot dog. Get into the spirit of being a baseball spectator, and you'll soon find the simple experience of going to a baseball game to be enjoyable in and of itself, regardless of the results on the field.
