Alstroemeria, also called the Peruvian Lily, is a popular flower for Mother's Day bouquets because of the beauty of its bright and showy blooms. There are dozens of species of this flower, so there are plenty of colors from which to choose.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Vase or basket
  1. Step 1

Select Alstroemeria blooms from a florist or a supermarket with a floral section. Since these blooms can last up to 2 weeks, you don't have to buy them on Mother's Day or even the day before the holiday. You can select your blooms a few days beforehand, take them home and pop them into a container of fresh water.

  2. Step 2

Buy a block of green flower-arranging foam (available at craft stores) and saturate it with room-temperature water on the day you are going to present the bouquet. You will only do this if you are preparing the bouquet yourself rather than having a florist deliver the flowers.

  3. Step 3

Place the wet block of flower-arranging foam into the basket or vase in which you will give the flowers. You can place a piece of plastic or a few folded paper towels under the foam if you choose.

  4. Step 4

Cut the stems to a length that will look good in the vase or basket you chose. Cut the stems in a diagonal direction, as this helps the flowers to "drink" water easier. Pull the leaves off of the flower stems and stick the flowers into the foam, so that it looks lush and slightly crowded.

  5. Step 5

Contact a floral-delivery service, such as Teleflora.com, if you want an Alstroemeria bouquet created and delivered for you (see Resources below). Ask the florist what kinds of bouquets incorporate this flower. Such nationwide services can take your order and arrange for a florist in your mother's neighborhood to fill it, allowing for a timely delivery.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider augmenting your bouquet of Alstroemeria with roses. Alstroemeria can look exquisite in an arrangement with roses, since the tight, regimented rosebuds provide a colorful foil to the decadent, drooping Alstroemeria petals.
  • If you want to give your Mother's Day flowers in a hand-held bouquet rather than in a vase, wrap the bottoms of the stems in a wet towel or bunch of paper towels until just before you give the bouquet. This prevents wilting and drying out.
