Iris blooms have a wild sweetness to them, making them a good choice for Mother's Day. One of the most exotically beautiful flowers in existence, the iris is well suited to creating a breathtaking arrangement. However, there are a few hints to follow for keeping the flowers fresh.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find irises at a local flower stand, florist or a supermarket that sells cut flowers. They are not as common as other types of Mother's Day flowers, so you may want to look early to find these blooms. You can also ask a florist to put a few aside for you to pick up on Mother's Day or on the preceding Friday or Saturday.

  2. Step 2

Select as many blooms as you want to give. Irises look wonderful in an abundant bunch of more than 1 dozen and can look artistic and arresting in a narrow vase, with just three or four artfully arranged blooms. If you want to give a single flower, however, an iris can be just as lovely and more unexpected than the traditional single rose.

  3. Step 3

Buy a vase at the same time as you are buying your flowers if you want to give these flowers in a vase instead of a bouquet. Florists and supermarket flower stands often have a selection of vases near the flowers. Plain glass vases work well for irises and are often quite affordable.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the blooms in floral paper if that's how you want to present them to Mom. You can simply tape the paper into a cone for a sweet, old-fashioned look, or you can tie a ribbon around the floral paper. You can also tie a ribbon around the flower stems themselves and give them that way.

  5. Step 5

Put the irises in water as soon as possible. Even if you are buying them the day before Mother's Day and you want to present them in a hand-held bouquet, you'll still want to place them in fresh, clean water as soon as you get home, and leave them there overnight.

Tips & Warnings
  • Irises look best in medium-sized vases. Bunch the blooms together or spread them out--the flowers look good both ways.
  • Do not fill in the iris arrangement with too much additional greenery, as the focus should be on this eye-catching flower.
