If you're thinking about accenting your Easter duds with a frilly hat, there's no need to spend an arm and a leg. A trip to the local craft store and some good, old-fashioned imagination is all you need to decorate a headpiece that the Easter Bunny himself would be proud to wear.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Basic woven straw hat
  • Satin or lace ribbon
  • Plastic Easter eggs
  • Plastic Easter grass
  • Miscellaneous Easter craft novelties

Step1
Wrap a wide piece of Easter ribbon around the hat where the crown meets the brim. Cut off excess ribbon and secure ends together with hot glue or a hat pin.
Step2
Use a hot glue gun to draw a line of glue around the brim of your hat, and carefully place handfuls of Easter grass on top of the glue. Press down on the grass to secure it, being careful not to touch your skin to the hot adhesive.
Step3
Hot glue a variety of colorful plastic eggs on top of the Easter grass. Decorate the entire hat brim with colored eggs, allowing grass to stick out between them for a nesting effect.
Step4
Arrange Easter novelty items such as wooden bunnies, beads or spring silk flowers around the eggs for additional holiday flair. Use your glue gun to secure them when you are satisfied with the arrangement.
Step5
Tie a large, multi-loop bow to further decorate the front or side of the hat's brim. Secure with stitches or hot glue and cut off any excess ribbon so it will not hang in the wearer's face.
Step6
Proudly don your flamboyant hat for church services or spring brunch. If it is a breezy Easter day, glue a string of elastic or ribbon to either side and tie a bow to secure the hat under your chin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your imagination to make the hat one of a kind. For example, open some of the plastic eggs and glue small wooden or stuffed chicks inside them for a fun, creative effect.
  • If you can't find a plain straw hat for your project, purchase a decorated one at a thrift or craft store and carefully remove the existing decorations to replace with your own.
  • If you are making this craft with children, supervise them carefully and do not permit them to use the hot glue gun on their own. Glue guns can cause severe burns.
