The first Easter bonnets were simple wreaths of braided flowers worn as halo-style hats. These fresh, floral designs were created to celebrate the demise of winter and the return of spring. For hundreds of years, people have donned their Sunday best to attend Easter church services and spring social events. Flower-adorned bonnets are one of the fun, traditional forms of Easter garb, and it is simple to make your own with a few inexpensive supplies and some creative flair.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Basic straw hat
  • Dried or silk flowers
  • Wooden Easter eggs and bunnies (or other decorative novelties)
  • Wire-edged ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  1. Step 1

Select wire-edged ribbon and dried or artificial flowers to complement the spring color palatte of your Easter outfit. Measure the circumference of the crown of your bonnet and cut the ribbon to the correct size.

  2. Step 2

Use your glue gun to attach the ribbon at the base of the hat's brim until ends meet. Secure the ends with hot glue. Alternately, you may secure ribbon with a hat pin.

  3. Step 3

Glue flowers and wooden egg or bird shapes, or other Easter novelties around the brim of the hat, leaving portions of the decorative ribbon exposed.

  4. Step 4

Make a multi-loop bow from additional ribbon, gluing it onto the side or front of the hat. If you have excess ribbon hanging from the bow, tack it to the bonnet brim with hot glue to avoid having it dangle in the wearer's face.

  5. Step 5

Don your new Easter bonnet for church services, Easter brunch or an Easter parade to celebrate the return of new life with the blossoms of spring.

Tips & Warnings
  • Woven straw hats may be painted with acrylic craft paint. Use two to three coats to ensure even coverage. Hot glue ribbon and novelties on the hat after the paint dries thoroughly.
  • Spring days can be windy. If you fear you'll lose your Easter finery in the breeze, attach a piece of elastic or ribbon to either side of the hat and secure it under your chin.
  • If you are not experienced with bow-tying, visit a craft store website such as Michaels.com for tips.
  • Hot glue guns can cause severe burns, so take care when using them. Make sure you carefully supervise children while making Easter bonnets, and do not allow them to use the glue gun on their own.
