How to Become an Electronics Maintenance Technician

An electronics maintenance technician is responsible for the repair, modification and maintenance of a variety of electrical and electronic equipment. He is required to perform tasks like wiring circuits, replacing components and repairing electronic devices. An electronic maintenance technician also performs test readings using several different instruments, including semiconductor testers, curve tracers, oscilloscopes, signal generators and digital multimeters.

Things You'll Need:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid driver's license
  1. Step 1

    Verify that you meet the minimum requirements to become an electronics maintenance technician, which include being at least 18 years of age, having a high school diploma or GED and possessing a valid driver's license.

  2. Step 2

    Study and earn an associate's degree in electronics or engineering technology.

  3. Step 3

    Develop good math, computer and technical skills. You must also be familiar with microprocessors, electronic components, circuits, troubleshooting applications and industrial computer systems.

  4. Step 4

    Gain extensive knowledge of electrical and electronics applications and theory. You should have the ability to perform board-level repairs and deal with hydraulic systems. You must also be able to read blueprints and schematics.

  5. Step 5

    Learn how to operate automated test equipment, wire coders, programmable controllers, audio/visual equipment, electronic devices, computer-controlled equipment, cutting and welding equipment, robotics, electronic-laboratory equipment, radio equipment and electronic instruments.

  6. Step 6

    Pass the Associate Certified Electronics Technician Examination to become an electronics maintenance technician. Visit The International Society of Certified Electronics website and The Electronics Technicians Association, International website for certification requirements.

  7. Step 7

    Complete additional certification requirements by gaining 2 years of work experience and taking the appropriate journeyman-level examination in the area of your expertise, such as computers, avionics, consumer electronics, industry, RADAR, telecommunications or satellites.

  8. Step 8

    Search for a job on The International Society of Certified Electronics website to become an electronics maintenance technician.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't apply to become an electronics maintenance technician if you don't have the physical strength required for moderate lifting. You must be able to lift 20 to 50 lb of equipment.
