How to Become an Electronics Test Technician

An electronics test technician tests electronic equipment to make sure it functions properly. This person also ensures the smooth running of day-testing activities and assists with debugging and hardware. An electronics test technician keeps detailed records on each piece of equipment and maintains a list of all tests, performance problems and repairs performed.

Things You’ll Need:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Associate degree in appropriate area
  • Certifications

Step1
Be at least 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or GED. This is the minimum required, without considering education, to become an electronics test technician.
Step2
Get formal training in electronics. You will need to obtain an associate's degree in electronic technology or electrical engineering. Visit a local college, vocational, technical or trade school to inquire about degree requirements to become an electronics test technician.
Step3
Choose a specialty area, such as commercial, computer or industrial electronics. This will determine the type of locations in which you can work.
Step4
Complete the appropriate courses in order to become an electronics test technician. These courses are physics, mathematics, electronics, electricity, troubleshooting and schematic reading.
Step5
Possess the appropriate skills and increase your electronics knowledge. You must have knowledge of DOS, Windows, computer hardware, programming, power engineering, microprocessor-based circuits, analog and RF theory and document-test procedures. In addition, you must have good eyesight and color perception.
Step6
Learn how to work the appropriate equipment. You will need to be familiar with using communication equipment, radar, medical-monitoring and control devices, computers and navigational equipment.
Step7
Pass the Certified Electronics Technician Examination. You must also pass the appropriate certification examination for your area of specialty.

Locate a job by visiting the job placement center at your school or the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians website.

Tips & Warnings

  • Prepare yourself and your family for the fact that you may be required to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, to service equipment in places that are open 24 hours a day, such as manufacturing plants, computer centers, hospitals and telephone companies. You also may have to work long or extended hours.
