When it comes to something as basic as a decorative pillow, there's really no sense in spending money on a pattern. You probably have the perfect pattern tool right in your living room, the newspaper. So, use the steps that follow to learn how to make a decorative pillow pattern using newspaper.

1. Smooth out a few larger pieces of newspaper to use as the pattern material. It's best to make sure that the morning coffee and breakfast aren't spilled on the section you plan to use.

2. Use household items you already have to make a design. For a round pillow, use a large dinner plate or the top of a round cake carrier. A larger plate will make a larger pillow and a smaller plate will make a smaller pillow.

3. Place the plate flat down on the newspaper. Make sure that the newspaper shows all the way around the plate. If not, get a larger piece of newspaper.

4. Draw or trace around the plate. Use scissors to cut out the newspaper pillow pattern.

5. Fold the corners of the newspaper into triangles to form perfect squares to use as a pattern. Again, you can determine the size of a pillow pattern by making a larger or smaller square. Continue in the same manner to trace around the outside of the square and cut out the square newspaper pillow pattern.
