How to Do the UFO Yo-Yo Trick

The UFO yo-yo trick is typically used to adjust the tension of the yo-yo string so that it isn't too tight or too loose. If you throw the UFO to the right, it tightens the string. If you throw it to the left it loosens your string. Throwing a UFO to the right and a UFO to the left before beginning your tricks helps the string reach the perfect tension.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yo-yo

Step1
Wind the yo-yo string all the way around the yo-yo axle and put the string loop around the middle finger of your dominant hand (in this example we will say it is the right hand). Grasp the yo-yo firmly in your palm.
Step2
Grip the yo-yo in your palm between your thumb and fingers as if you were going to throw it normally, except hold it sideways instead of up and down. Hold your palm downward to throw to the right.
Step3
Throw the yo-yo to the right of you at an approximately a 45-degree angle.
Step4
Grab the string with the fingers of your left hand once the yo-yo reaches the end of the string and begins to "sleep."
Step5
Run the string along with your thumb and forefinger out horizontally, moving your hand closer to the yo-yo until it is about 3 or 4 inches above the yo-yo and the string is in a straight line horizontal to the floor.
Step6
Flip the yo-yo up and back toward your right hand and pull it in.
Step7
Do the same by throwing the yo-yo to the left, which loosens the tension in the string. Throw it exactly the same way except when holding your yo-yo, keep the palm upward before throwing instead of downward.

Tips & Warnings

  • You need to throw the yo-yo with a strong throw to get this trick to work correctly.
