How to Tune the Violin

Tune each string on a violin to the proper pitch before practicing or playing. The thickest string with the lowest note on a violin is the G string. Next comes the D string, then A and then E. A portable tuner, pitch pipe or properly tuned piano has the notes you need.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tuner (chromatic or violin) or other tuning device
  1. Step 1

Decide on the kind of tuner to use. The chromatic tuner helps tune the violin and also has chromatic scales for practice. A violin tuner or pitch pipe can be used to find the right notes.

  2. Step 2

Get familiar with the tuning devices on the violin. At the top of the instrument are the pegs (usually black) that stick out, two on each side, just under the scroll. A fine tuner, or string adjuster, is located under the bridge on the E string (it looks like a tiny screw). Beginner instruments often have fine tuners on other strings.

  3. Step 3

Attach the chromatic or violin tuner to the bridge. Play the G note on the tuner, then pluck the G string. The light on the tuner indicates if the note is flat or sharp.

  4. Step 4

Use the fine tuner for a slight adjustment on the string. Turn it slightly, then listen again.

  5. Step 5

Turn the peg on the scroll of the violin to make a larger adjustment, or if there is no fine tuner, on the string. Gently push the peg in and turn slightly. Check the pitch and adjust as necessary.

  6. Step 6

Repeat the process for the D, A and E strings of the violin.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn each string in one note increments when a major change in pitch is needed. This helps avoid breaking a string.
  • The violin tuner only has the notes you need and won't register unless you are in range. The chromatic tuner registers the note the string is on, so you know how much to loosen or tighten the string.
  • Use the pitch pipe or piano by repeatedly playing the note and making adjustments.
