Hawaiians started surfing on wooden planks and have become the leaders in design and construction of surfboards worldwide. The modern surfboards have a foam interior and a fiberglass outside coating. Learn the parts of a surfboard in these easy tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to a surfboard shop and talk to a sales person. Survey the surfboard from top to bottom. Learn the parts of the board from the sales clerk.

  2. Step 2

Touch the nose at the front of the surfboard. The sales clerk will show you the difference between the front and the back.

  3. Step 3

Run your hand down the deck of the board. Fiberglass makes the deck smooth to the touch.

  4. Step 4

Feel the rails along the edge of the deck. They will help you maneuver the board through the water.

  5. Step 5

Search for the stringer in the middle of the deck. The stringer will help the surfer find balance.

  6. Step 6

Rub your hand along the board until you reach the tail. The tail is at the end of the board. It will have a fin on the bottom of the surfboard.

  7. Step 7

Find the leash plug at the tail of the surfboard. A surfer wears a bracelet and leash around their ankle and it's plugged into the surfboard.

Tips & Warnings
  • Beginners should use as big a board as possible to help with flotation and standing.
  • Raise your hand over your head to see what length you need for the surfboard.
  • Do not surf without a leg bracelet.
