How to Remove a Spark Plug Wire

Spark plug wires are the wire that house a boot on the end connecting the spark plug to the distributor or coil, depending on your vehicle. Removing the spark plug wire is an essential step when cleaning, replacing or otherwise dealing with the spark plugs. These steps explain how to remove a spark plug wire.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the wire from one spark plug at a time to avoid confusion and mixing up the wires, which need to be connected to particular spark plugs in order to work properly.

    • 2

Pull firmly, jiggling slightly, on the boot at the end of the spark plug wire. It should come off easily if there is no corrosion. If the boot is not coming off of the spark plug, consider using a Spark Plug Wire Puller. These can be found at any auto parts store.

    • 3

Use compressed air to blow clear the area around the spark plug and in the end of the boot. This will remove possible debris and corrosion. It will also keep debris from falling into the combustion chamber.

    • 4

Clean the wires and boot with Armor All or another cleaner safe for rubber and vinyl. Spray outside of boot with Armor All Protectant to keep debris and corrosion from accumulating on the boot.

Tips & Warnings

  • You should visually inspect the spark plug wires and boots at every oil change. Look for cracks in the rubber, debris build up and corrosion.

  • Always turn the vehicle off and allow it to cool before starting. You should also disconnect the positive battery terminal for maximun safety.
