How to Pour Lye Soap Into Molds

You can easily make soap by melting any mix from a craft store and pouring it into soap molds to shape. You can use molds designed for use as soap molds or you can make your own mold from household products like baking or muffin tins.

Things You’ll Need:

• Soap molds
• Soap mix
• Cutting board (optional)
• Ladle (optional)
• Liquid measuring cup with spout (optional)
• Spray bottle
• Rubbing alcohol
• Plastic wrap

Pour a Single Layer of Soap

1. Wash and dry the soap molds and then set them on a flat surface. Consider putting the molds on a cutting board to insulate the flat surface from the heat of the soap mix.
2. Prepare the soap mix and allow it to cool. Soap over 140 degrees F can warp or bend the soap molds.
3. Use a ladle or a liquid measuring cup with a spout to pour the warm soap into the molds.
4. Leave 1/2 to 1 inch between the soap and the top of the mix to allow for expansion as the soap hardens.
5. Spray rubbing alcohol on top of the soap to help eliminate air bubbles.
6. Put plastic wrap over the top of the molds to seal out air while you allow the soap to cure.

Pour a Double Layer of Soap

7. Pour a single layer of soap following the steps in Section 1. At Step 4, leave enough room in the mold for a second layer.
8. Allow the first layer to harden.
9. Spray the first layer of soap with rubbing alcohol.
10. Melt the next batch of soap mix and pour the second layer on top of the first layer.
11. Leave 1/2 to 1 inch between the soap and the top of the mix to allow for expansion as the soap hardens.
12. Eliminate air bubbles with a final spray of rubbing alcohol on top of the second layer.
13. Put plastic wrap over the top of the molds to seal out air while you allow the soap to cure.

Tips & Warnings

• A flexible surface allows you to bend the mold to release the soap.
• Use a funnel to pour soap into a small mold.
