A flat felt seam is a great seam for sportswear items because it is a very durable seam that will take a lot of wear. It is also a good seam for really heavy fabrics like denim material. Although it has a lot of uses, the flat felt seam is extremely easy. All you have to know is how to sew a straight line.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Place the fabric so that the wrong sides face each other with the edge of the fabric to sew lined up evenly.

  2. Step 2

Line up the needle about 5/8 of an inch from the edge of the fabric. Sew a straight seam down the fabric and cut the threads.

  3. Step 3

Separate the two sides of the fabric and lay it out on an ironing surface with the seam facing upwards.

  4. Step 4

Iron the seam to once side. Remember to set the iron to the correct setting.

  5. Step 5

Take the edge of the fabric and fold it under.

  6. Step 6

Iron the folded under section to keep it in place. You will want to fold a small section of fabric under, iron that section and fold the next section.

  7. Step 7

Pin the folded area of the seam to hold it securely.

  8. Step 8

Take the fabric back to the sewing machine and line up the needle right up against the edge of the fabric.

  9. Step 9

Sew a seam right down the very edge of the folded-under seam. Cut the thread and you're finished.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to remove the pins before you sew over them. Sewing right over them can cause damage to your sewing machine.
