How to Set Up a Wireless Internet Router at Home

Wireless home networks are very common methods of data transfer. Connecting a computer to a wireless Internet gateway is the preferred method for most modern computer systems needing to access the World Wide Web. Follow these steps to set up a wireless Internet router at home.

Things You'll Need:

• Wireless Internet router
• High-speed modem
• Network cables

1. Introduce a high-speed modem to the computer system. This modem should either be a high-speed DSL or cable modem capable of high bandwidth data transfer.

2. Disconnect power to the modem and remove any network cables connected to the unit.

3. Connect an appropriate network cable from the LAN port on the rear of the wireless Internet router to the network port on the rear of the high-speed modem.

4. Attach another appropriate network cable to the computer's LAN connection port on the rear of the computer to any of the open network ports at the rear of the wireless Internet router.

5. Reconnect the power cable to the high-speed modem and to the wireless Internet router.

6. Determine that the computer has a solid connection to the router and modem. See that the traffic light indicators on the front of the router glow green, indicating a positive connection.

7. Inspect all connections and establish a connection to the Internet using the router and computer's software.

Tips & Warnings

• Adjust the wireless router's antennae for better reception through a home or business.
• Other equipment can be plugged into the rear network ports on the router to network those devices.
• Purchase wireless access points that utilize other equipment's USB ports to connect remote devices.
• Disconnect power to all devices before connecting network cables.
