Step 1
Get to know your particular serger. The threading sequence displayed on the lower looper door on some models is a helpful reminder of how to thread the machine. You may want to re-thread the machine several times to familiarize yourself with the sequence.
-
Step 2
Observe the thread guides, starting with the ones above the spools, going through the tension disks and ending with the ones above the needles and looper eyes. They are all there for a specific purpose and if you miss threading one, the serger won't sew correctly.
-
Step 3
Use the proper thread. Serger thread is finer than all-purpose thread and can withstand high-speed sewing because of the special finish applied during manufacturing. You can use other types of threads that aren't on a cone by removing the cone holder from the thread post, placing the spool on the post and placing the disk-shaped thread guide on top of the spool. This keeps the thread from tangling as it unwinds from the spool.
-
Step 4
Follow the proper sequence every time you thread the serger or it won't sew correctly. Most sergers are threaded by starting with the upper looper first and then the lower looper. If you have two needles, it doesn't matter which one you thread first; it does make a difference with the loopers, however.
