Step 1
Determine the needs of the musician before embarking on the search for the instrument. Decide whether the individual playing the sax is a professional or student musician, since it will help determine the price range and difficulty of the instrument needed.
-
Step 2
Begin doing some research online into the various aspects of the saxophone that cause differences in price range. Note that some of the more popular saxophone brands have various ranges of instruments to suit the specific musician's needs.
-
Step 3
Assess what kind of saxophone is needed; you can choose from several varieties including baritone saxophone, soprano saxophones, soprano saxophones, bass sax and contra bass sax. The better quality saxophones will cost upwards of $2000-$10,000, depending upon brands.
-
Step 4
Locate a music store in your area. Visit so you can test a range of instruments. Ask a sales representative to assist you in testing various instruments. If necessary, ask to be left alone while the you are playing so you're not swayed by sales pressure.
-
Step 5
Take note of how each instrument plays in relation to the price. Inquire what warranties come with the instrument. Think about secondhand instruments if the quality you want is a bit out of your price range.
