No matter how much you love the water and boating, to thoroughly enjoy sailing you really need to learn a little about the sport. Unlike power boating, where all you need to do is turn a key and steer, sailing is a more complicated activity that requires knowledge and practice. Lessons can be the key to getting started to really enjoying the sailing experience.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go sailing with a friend to find out what is involved in the sport. By watching someone and following directions to help sail the boat, you can better understand the level of energy and experience you will need to get before you can really enjoy sailing.

  2. Step 2

Join a crew that either races or travels. As part of a crew, you will be asked to perform many or all of the duties necessary to make the boat obey. Camaraderie among sailors is another key element of the sport; one which you may or may not appreciate.

  3. Step 3

Take at least a bare-bones primer sailing lesson before taking a sailboat out by yourself or with other inexperienced sailors. It is easy to get stuck or drift into place, such as tanker lanes, where you could get into trouble. Knowing the basics will allow you to at least maneuver the boat. With greater skill and practice, the true enjoyment will follow.

  4. Step 4

Charter a sailboat in a place that has calm, warm waters. As you are learning to sail and increasing your enjoyment of the sport, you can put your lessons to good use. You'll still enjoy the experience even if you tip the boat or run off course if you are in glorious blue waters.
