Step 1
Go to the local art supply store or craft retailer to see their selection of acrylic paint before you begin the project. You'll find that acrylic paint comes in more than one form and is in more than one aisle of the art supply store.
-
Step 2
Determine what type of acrylic paint you will need. For painting on canvas, you will want at least a student grade of acrylic paint because it has a higher pigment content and thicker consistency that makes blending easier and the end result brighter. Student grade or higher acrylic paints usually come in tubes and can be found near the oil paints.

Step 3
Choose colors based on your expertise in blending or how many colors you need in the finished project. If you are working with a wide spectrum of color, be sure to purchase black, white and the primary colors of blue, red and yellow. If you are trying to achieve a metallic effect you can also purchase colors of gold, silver or bronze.

Step 4
Purchase enough paint to finish the project. Depending on the size of the project, you will want enough paint to cover the area you are working with. An easy way to ensure enough acrylic paint is to buy larger tubes or bottles of primary colors and blend them at home as needed.
