How to Add New Oil To Your Engine After Draining the Old Oil

Adding the proper of amount of oil to your car's engine is necessary to guarantee proper performance and longevity of your engine. Too little oil or too much oil can damage your engine.

Things You'll Need:

  • Funnel
  • Oil
  1. Step 1

    Check your owner's manual to find the proper oil weight and number of quarts needed for your car. For example, 10W-40 is one choice of oil weight. Both the oil weight and number of quarts needed will vary from vehicle to vehicle.

  2. Step 2

    Find the oil fill cap on your car's engine.

  3. Step 3

    Remove the oil cap by unscrewing it.

  4. Step 4

    Place the oil cap in a secure place.

  5. Step 5

    Put a funnel in the opening that was exposed when you took off the oil cap. The funnel keeps the oil from spilling onto the engine.

  6. Step 6

    Add the amount of oil to the engine that was specified in the owner's manual.

  7. Step 7

    Replace the oil cap by screwing it on securely. Some oil caps will click when secured but not all oil caps will click when secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you do not have your owner's manual, periodically check the oil level using the dipstick while filling the engine. Keep in mind that because the oil filter is empty, it may be necessary to replace the oil cap and let the car run for five minutes before turning it off to get a proper oil level reading.
  • When you add new oil to the engine, be careful not to spill oil on the engine. This will cause the engine to smoke as the oil is burning off.
