Grout is the substance that goes in between the glass tiles in a mosaic. Grouting a mosaic is similar to grouting tile in household projects. It's easy to apply, but removing it takes some practice and experience. It's important to get all the grout off the glass without removing too much from between the tiles.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mix grout powder with water. Make more than you think you will need so you don't run out of grout. Stir the grout until it's a thick paste that's difficult to stir. Let sit for 10 minutes or so. Color the grout with cement dye if desired.

  2. Step 2

Put on gloves. Push the grout into the ceramic. Rub in circles until you're sure the whole piece is covered.

  3. Step 3

Check the piece every 10 minutes. When the grout has dried a little bit, dip a sponge in clear water. Wring it out until it's almost dry. Rub over the mosaic to remove the excess grout. Make sure that the grout is dry enough and that you aren't removing too much.

  4. Step 4

Let the mosaic sit for another 5 to 10 minutes. Rub it again with a slightly damp sponge. Repeat until the grout is almost dry.

  5. Step 5

Buff the mosaic with a rag once the grout is almost completely dry to expose the glass, then the corners. Polish the mosaic with a clean, dry rag.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a grout color that is not too close to the glass colors. The tiles should stand out from the grout, not blend in.
  • Wear gloves and a dust mask when working with grout.
