How to Perform a Basic Leg Triangle

The basic leg triangle, also known as a leg lock, is a very effective move in martial arts. The concept of the basic leg triangle is simple: depriving your opponent of air. A challenging technique, it can be difficult to escape from once applied.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Place your right foot on your kneeling opponent's thigh when you are lying on your back.

  2. Step 2

    Grasp your opponent's right hand, drawing him forward, thus controlling his body.

  3. Step 3

    Lock your other leg behind your opponent's neck, making sure your thigh rests along side your opponent's neck, immobilizing him still further.

  4. Step 4

    Loop your left leg over your right foot, tucking your opponent's head between your legs.

  5. Step 5

    Bend your torso forward as you apply the pressure to your opponent's neck with your legs.

  6. Step 6

    Wait until your opponent taps out or you are asked to desist by the referee.

  7. Step 7

    Practice performing a basic leg triangle over and over in the training ring until it become second nature.

  8. Step 8

    Learn to perform the basic leg triangle while sparring. The trick to performing the basic leg triangle in a match is timing and knowing how to recognize an opportunity to perform the technique. Though the name contains the word "basic" the technique is challenging, but well worth learning because of its effectiveness.
