Step 1
Determine your type of skin. Foundations made for all skin types are available. For example, pressed powder foundation usually works quite well for combination skin and helps to reduce shine.
-
Step 2
Clean and moisturize your face before testing a new foundation. Any old foundation, powder or other makeup will distort the color.
-
Step 3
Try a yellow-based foundation first. Foundations with other undertones are rarely a good choice for anyone. Yellow is the natural undertone of all human skin.
-
Step 4
Test the foundation shade on your face. The hand or neck is not a good choice because those places do not get the same amount of sun as your face does. Therefore, they will not be the same color.
-
Step 5
Blend in the foundation well. The shade of many foundations, especially water-based ones, will change a little bit when it dries.
-
Step 6
Go outside to see if the foundation is right for you. Natural light is the best. Fluorescent and other artificial lighting will alter the actual appearance of your foundation.
-
Step 7
Check if your foundation looks natural. You should appear as if you have naturally perfect (or nearly perfect) skin. It should not be obvious that you are wearing a foundation, and you should not be able to tell where the foundation starts and stops.
