How to Change the Blades on a Lawn Mower

Dull blades can reduce lawn mower performance by up to 20 percent. The lawn mower blade should be changed anytime you notice chips, dents or that the blade is dull. Some experts recommend changing the lawn mower blade once a year to ensure maximum cutting performance and a heathier lawn.

Things You’ll Need:

• Wooden block
• Socket set
• Ratchet

Disassemble the Blade Assembly

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire so no power will reach the lawn mower blade.
2. Tilt the lawn mower onto its rear wheels. Use a wooden block to secure the blade so it can't move.
3. Use the appropriate socket and a heavy duty ratchet to loosen and remove the bolt that holds the blade on the lawn mower.
4. Remove the locking bracket.
5. Pull the old lawn mower blade off of the lawn mower.
6. Take off the blade adaptor.
7. Place these in a secure location because you will need them to secure the new blade to the lawn mower.

Reassemble the Blade Assembly

8. Slide the blade adapter back on the lawn mower.
9. Line up the new blade to the blade adapter. The side of the blade with the printing should face the ground.
10. Fit the locking bracket on the new blade. It will only fit one way.
11. Replace the bolt and secure it, making it as tight as possible.
