If your lawn mower uses paper filters you will periodically need to replace the filter. If your mower uses foam filters, however, you can clean the filter instead of replacing it. You will only need to replace the foam filter on your lawn mower if it gets ripped or torn.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the filter case on the top of your lawn mower. Using a screwdriver remove the screw that is holding it to the mower.

  2. Step 2

Take the filter case cover off of the lawn mower and open it up. Remove the foam filter from the inside of the cover.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the inside of the cover clean using a dry paper towel and set it aside.

  4. Step 4

Pick off any large pieces of dirt and debris that you see on the foam filter.

  5. Step 5

Use a small amount of dish soap or all-purpose cleaner to clean the foam filter. Work the cleaner into and through the filter and then use a garden hose to wet the filter and finish cleaning it. Rinse all of the soap out of the foam filter,

  6. Step 6

Put the clean foam filter back into the cover. Close the cover and screw it back into place on the top of the lawn mower.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your foam filter should get a rip or tear and need to be replaced always soak the new filter in clean engine oil before using. Squeeze out the excess oil before putting the new filter into the mower.

on 8/14/2008 Most foam filters have oil in them to help capture dirt. If so, you must let the filter dry completely inside and out after cleaning and degreasing.

Only when it is completely clean and dry do you pour a small amount of clean motor oil on the filter and work through the entire volume of the filter. Now it is ready to be placed in the filter housing.
