A trucker's hitch knot is a useful knot for not only securing a boat to a mooring but also for securing loads or tarpaulins. As suggested by the name, it is widely used by truckers, but also boaters, campers and more. Here's how to tie it.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tie a knot in one end of the rope.

  2. Step 2

Make a loop in the middle of the rope.

  3. Step 3

Pass the loop through the middle of the knot. This loop does not have to be large—just large enough to through which to pass the other end.

  4. Step 4

Make a half turn around the object you wish to lash with the free end of the rope.

  5. Step 5

Thread the free end of the rope through the loop.

  6. Step 6

Secure the trucker's hitch knot with a half hitch knot. A half hitch knot is formed by passing one end of the rope around itself, then passing the end through the loop and pulling it tight.

  7. Step 7

Add another cinch knot to make the trucker's hitch knot even more secure.

  8. Step 8

Tie another variation of the trucker's hitch knot by making a second loop and passing it through the first, then passing the free end of the rope around the object and threading the end through the second loop. This variation can be finished with two half hitches as above.
