The knit stitch is the most important stitch in knitting. It's the backbone of the craft. In fact, there are only two types of stitches in knitting, the knit stitch and the purl stitch. Knitting every row in knit stitch creates a garter stitch material. After you learn how to cast on, you must know how to do a knit stitch.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Hold the needle with all of your cast-on stitches in your left hand. In the right hand, take the other needle and hold the yarn attached to the ball.

  2. Step 2

Insert your right needle's tip under your first loop on your left needle and position the right needle just behind the left needle.

  3. Step 3

Pass the yarn connected to the ball around the back of your right needle and then between your two needles.

  4. Step 4

Pull the loop down and through to the front. Then pull the left needle under the right, drawing the loop with it.

  5. Step 5

Slip the remainder of the stitch off the left needle as you tighten the yarn's tension with your right fingers. The knit stitch is now on your right needle.

  6. Step 6

Continue this process for each stitch until you reach the end of your row.

  7. Step 7

Begin knitting your next row by turning your work around so the back faces you. The stitches are now on your left again with the needle in your right hand empty and ready to knit the next row.
