One of the main stitches in knitting is, obviously, the knit stitch. It's the v-shaped stitch that most people associate with a knit piece. Some projects are done entirely in the knit stitch. However, most combine this stitch with the purl stitch to create a more uniform right and wrong side to the project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin with all stitches on one needle. Hold this needle in your non-dominant hand. Hold the empty needle in your dominant hand. Ensure the yarn leading to the ball or skein is in the back of your project.

  2. Step 2

Locate the loop of the first stitch on the full needle. Bring that loop towards the end of the needle. At the same time, be careful to not allow the stitch to slip off the needle.

  3. Step 3

Insert the empty needle into the first loop. Approach it from the front and insert it into the loop from the front to the back.

  4. Step 4

Wrap the yarn once around the needle and bring the needle out through the front again. This will draw the wrapped yarn through the loop.

  5. Step 5

Slip the loop that you just used to knit from off of the full needle.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps 2 through 6 until all stitches are on the needle in your dominant hand, or as your pattern instructs.

  7. Step 7

Flip the now full needle to your non-dominant hand and the now empty needle to your dominant hand. You're now ready for the next row.
