Tambourines are one of the oldest instruments in the world, and kids love playing music on them. It's easy to make a tambourine out of simple household items. Kids can express themselves by decorating the tambourine and making music with it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Paper plates
  • Crayons, stickers and collage paper
  • Uncooked beans, popcorn, rice, small stones, pasta or dried peas
  • Duct tape
  • Yarn or pipe cleaners
  • Ribbons

Use Duct Tape

Step1
Decorate the backs of 2 paper plates. Use decoupage, crayons or stickers. Create brightly colored pictures and collages. Glue on jingle bells, if desired.
Step2
Turn the plates over. Pour some uncooked beans, popcorn, rice, small stones, pasta or dried peas onto one of the plates. Use as many ingredients as you'd like. Put the other plate on top, face down.
Step3
Cut duct tape into short strips. Tape tightly all around the edge of the 2 plates. Make sure there are no gaps.
Step4
Run a single piece of tape around the edge, over the smaller strips. Fold the edges down so that they are flat against the plate.
Step5
String ribbons from the edge of the tambourine.

Use Yarn or Pipe Cleaners

Step1
Decorate the bottoms of 2 paper plates.
Step2
Punch holes along the rims of each plate. Run yarn or pipe cleaners in an in-and-out pattern through the holes to stitch the plates together. Join the top half of the plates together.
Step3
Turn the plates so that the opening is facing up. Open the plates. Pour some uncooked beans, popcorn, rice, small stones, pasta or dried peas into the cavity. Use as many ingredients as you'd like.
Step4
Weave yarn or pipe cleaners through the remainder of the holes.
Step5
String ribbons from the edge of the tambourine.
