How to Cross Check When Cutting Men's Hair With a Razor

Cross checking is the easiest and best way to double check the hair you have just cut. When cutting a man's hair with a razor, you cut with a downward motion. To cross check the hair, push the hair in the opposite direction.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Spread your fingers out and run your hands through the back of the hair from the bottom to the top. This should get all the textured hair standing up off the head.

  2. Step 2

Repeat the process covering each section of hair in the back and on the sides of the head. Take time to check for sections or pieces of hair that are longer than others.

  3. Step 3

Pinch longer hairs between your fingers, pulling the hair with a medium amount of tension. Comb the razor down over the hair to trim it.

  4. Step 4

Continue the cross checking procedure on the top of the head, working your hands from front to the back and cutting any hair that stands out or is too long.

  5. Step 5

Repeat Steps 1 and 2 once you have cross checked all sections of the back, sides and top of the head. Work your fingers through to double check that you have achieved the texture you want.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use a sharp razor for the best and most accurate cuts.
  • Keep the hair wet by spritzing with extra water if it starts to dry.
  • Be careful not to cut areas you think are too high before checking other areas of the same section. You may accidentally trim too much of one area and then have to cut the other to match.
