How to Cut the Hair on a Cat

Depending on the temperament of your cat, cutting his hair could be easy or hard. Just like people, cats have personalities, comfort levels and trust issues. There are electric clippers designed solely for animal use. The vibration and sound is softer and less intrusive.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the clippers and let your cat get use to the noise. She may be curious about the noise and vibration-let her investigate.

    • 2

Resign yourself to the fact that your cat may not want to have a hair cat. Personalities in animals are different-do not force your will on the cat.

    • 3

Set your cat down in the crook of your arm. Place the cat either in your lap or on the floor between your knees. Size will determine the position for you.

    • 4

Pin the cat to your side with your arm. The cat cannot scratch you as easily in this position.

    • 5

Take the clippers and start to shave at the hips of the cat. If the cat squirms, try to relax him, but if he continues to be uncomfortable, release the cat immediately.

    • 6

Make body length strokes that are smooth and not forced. Do not nick the skin of the cat-they bleed just as you do.

    • 7

Weigh your relationship with your cat. The older a cat gets, the more set in her ways it becomes. A younger cat may be more tolerant of your wish to cut his hair.

Tips & Warnings

  • The goal is to enjoy this experience with your cat.

  • Have a hairstyle in mind before you start the cutting-it will be a better process for both you and the cat.

  • Do not force your cat to get its hair cut. Trauma will alter the personality of your cat-they may not trust you any more if you force them.
