Learning to properly swing a golf club is undoubtedly the most important element in the sport of golf. There are 3 parts to a golf swing--the back swing, the down swing and the follow through. Follow the steps below to learn the correct way to swing a golf club.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Take a stance up to the ball with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. Bend over the ball at the hips keeping your back straight. It should feel like you're sticking your bottom out. Do a little shake if you like.

  2. Step 2

Hold the golf club so when you bend over the ball your arms will hang straight down. This is the distance you'll stand from the ball.

  3. Step 3

Start your backswing, keeping your eye on the ball. When the club is parallel with the ground, the club face should point straight up.

  4. Step 4

Continue through the back swing keeping your wrist locked and straight, transferring your weight to your right leg. Your left knee should point toward the ball. At the top of your back swing bend your right elbow, ideally at a 90-degree angle and keep your left arm as straight as possible.

  5. Step 5

Come down with the club, this is the down or forward swing. Begin with transferring your hips and weight to the left. The club will follow from the right inside of the target line to square with the ball on impact.

  6. Step 6

Follow through left of the target, continuing to transfer your weight to your left foot and letting the club release all the way back. Your right foot will come up to your toe with all of your weight transferred to your left foot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Envision a circular pattern of the club swinging from inside right to inside left.
  • When taking practice swings, stop and check the position of the club and club head at different points throughout your swing.
