Floral design is a relaxing hobby for anyone wishing to add beauty and balance to a space. Although arranging flowers may seem difficult, there are only a few things to consider before you begin. To make your floral design more visually appealing, follow these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Choose different varieties and colors of flowers to add interest to your floral design. Take into consideration the location of the flower arrangement, as well as what type of vase you will use, before you select your flowers.

  2. Step 2

Measure the desired length of the flower stem by comparing it to the height of the vase and deciding how high you want the flower to stand. Cut the excess stem using a pair of shears. Strip away any leaves that fall below the water line in the vase.

  3. Step 3

Balance flowers with large heads, such as lilies, with small-headed flowers and foliage. Begin by placing your anchor flowers in the vase, such as small-headed flowers and foliage, and concentrate those on the outer edges. Continue to build your arrangement by adding bigger flowers.

  4. Step 4

Fill any gaps in your floral design with remaining foliage and small-headed flowers. Turn the vase as you are working so that you can see the arrangement from all sides. Disguise the stems with cuts of small flowers and foliage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Select a vase that is 1/3 the total height of your arrangement.
  • Use a piece of greenery foam to stabilize flowers with heavy heads.
  • Flower arrangements can be either symmetrical, when the arrangement on one side is a mirror image of the other, or asymmetrical, when balance is concentrated to one side of the arrangement.
