You can save a lot of money by doing little jobs yourself around the house. But when it comes to electrics many people get worried, as they know a mistake can be costly. Here are some tips to determine the amperage, also known as amps, for an electrical outlet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Flashlight (optional)
  • Plastic caps for the electrical wires
  1. Step 1

Shut off all electricity or power to the wires in the outlet you are going to change. No sense in taking any risks. Keep a flashlight by your side if you need extra light for the work.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the electrical outlet with the screwdriver.

  3. Step 3

Remove the faceplate and electrical outlet. Most electrical outlets have screws or fasteners, which keep the wires attached inside it. Loosen these screws to remove the wires. Cap each wire with appropriately colored plastic caps.

  4. Step 4

Flip the electrical outlet over and look for the amps marking. You will usually find this on the bottom of the electrical outlet. There may also be a requirement as to the thickness of the wires that may be used.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are still unsure of how many amps your electrical outlet utilizes, bring it to the hardware store with you and ask a representative.
  • It cannot be said enough to make sure the power supply to the outlet has been turned off. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to call an electrician. It will cost you a few bucks, but you will not be putting yourself at risk.
