How to Use the Rear View Mirror

Driving instructors say that using the rearview mirror should become a habit that you don't even think about when driving. In addition, other elements of the rearview mirror should be taken into consideration. Driving becomes second nature after a very short time, but the rearview mirror need always be used consciously. Know that your safety, and the safety of everyone else on the road, depends on it.

Instructions

Keep your eyes on the road while looking in the rearview mirror. The look should be just a glance that takes place continuously while you are driving.

    • 2

Memorize the cars that you see there so that you can watch for those cars to pass you or leave the road. When it comes time for you to make a turn or change lanes, you can look for those cars that were behind at your last look. If you see a different car and did not see the original car leave the road, you will need to wait in case the driver has moved into your blind spot.

Understand the limited view that you receive from the rearview mirror. You can see what is directly behind you and to the sides of your car's rear end. The rearview mirror cannot substitute for a slight turn of your head when changing lanes. All cars have a blind spot not reflected in the rearview mirror.

Use the little tab on the bottom of the rearview mirror to adjust the mirror at night. This tab will turn the mirror up ever so slightly to prevent extreme glare. The night mode does not change the view from the rearview mirror, just the intensity of the lights.
