How to Parallel Park a Car

In order to pass a driving test, you must know how to parallel park. Even if you live in an area where parallel parking is rare, the time will come where parallel parking is your only choice. Try going downtown in a large city and you'll understand why parallel parking is an essential skill.

Instructions

    • 1

Press your turn signal as you approach a parallel parking spot. The parking space must be 6 feet longer than your car. Pull up so the back of your car is even with the front edge of the parking space. Stay close to the car at your side.

    • 2

Turn the steering wheel toward the curb. One full turn of the wheel is the right amount to put your rear wheels in the correct position. Put your car in reverse and ease backward, allowing your car to straighten out as it goes back.

    • 3

Continue to go backwards until you almost touch the curb with your rear wheel. Put your car in drive and turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction.

    • 4

Pull forward to straighten out your car and angle it away from the curb. Keep an eye on the car in front of you and the one behind you to be sure you do not hit either one.

    • 5

Pull forward and backward as needed to center the car in the space.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use your mirrors to keep an eye on other cars and the curb.

  • Be sure to watch for traffic that may not be paying attention to you.
