Things You'll Need:
- Leash
- Treats
-
Step 1
Show your puppy her new leash. While she is investigating the leash avoid letting her chew on it. This helps teach your puppy that it's nothing to be afraid of, and that the leash is not a toy.
-
Step 2
Attach a lightweight leash to your puppy's collar. Let your puppy walk around with the leash dragging along with him, until he has forgotten about it, or is comfortable with it. Redirect your puppy if he begins chewing on the leash.
-
Step 3
Pick up the other end of the leash and stand firmly in place. If she pulls the leash tight call her name and reward her for coming back to you.
-
Step 4
Walk around the room with your puppy, making sure that the leash is loose and not pulling. Praise him often when he walks with you.
-
Step 5
Stop and call your puppy to you if she pulls the leash tight, or if she sits down. Give her a treat when she arrives.
-
Step 6
Repeat this for several days and you will have a puppy that loves to see the leash. You and your puppy will be able to enjoy leash time without a tug of war.
