How to Check Front Differential Fluid

Differential fluid is a key component to the proper functioning of your vehicle and as with all other fluids, it is important to check and change the differential fluid often. This is usually recommended every 6 months or 75,000 miles. Consult your vehicle manual for a more specific time frame.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pop the hood and place the holding rod in a secure position so the hood will not move or fall while you are under it. If you are a larger person, you may want to angle the hood at 90 degrees to allow for better access.

  2. Step 2

Locate the little grommet with the pop rod behind it and pull the pop rod out. Remove the little plug, put the pop rod into the same notch it came out of, only backwards, and secure in the little hole. The hood should now be at a 90 degree angle for better access.

  3. Step 3

Find the front differential dip stick. It should be located right below the air cleaner box and should have a yellow tip. Pull the dip stick out and wipe it off with a clean rag. Dip the dip stick back into the differential fluid and pull back out. This will give you a more accurate reading.

  4. Step 4

Study the 2 lines on the dip stick. If your fluid level is below the bottom line, you need to add differential fluid. If it is at the top line or between the 2 lines, your fluid level is at the recommended level. Reinstall the dip stick.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's a good idea to wear latex gloves when handling any car fluids. Not only do they stain, but they can be damaging to your skin and eyes if touched.
