How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Tree

Christmas trees are the centerpieces of many homes during the holidays, and choosing the perfect one can be frustrating. Follow these steps to select a tree that will complement your home's interior and enhance its beauty as your family gathers to celebrate the season.

1. Choose the location in your home where you plan on putting the tree and take measurements of the height of that room's ceiling and the width of the exact space where the tree will stand. Take these measurements with you when you go to choose your Christmas tree.
2. Select a tree that is 80 percent of the height of the room in which it will appear. For example, if the room is 10 feet tall, select a tree that is 8 feet tall. This will allow you to place a decoration on top of the tree, and still have space between the top of the decoration and the ceiling.
3. Look for a full tree without missing branches or large bare spots. A full tree is a healthy tree.
4. Ensure that the Christmas tree you choose has a straight trunk that will fit properly in your tree stand. If the trunk is curved, you may have problems securing it within the stand.
5. Buy a fresh tree with shiny and green needles. Tug on a branch to make sure that the needles stay on the limb.
6. Shake the tree before bringing it home to make certain that all loose needles are gone.
7. Cut the Christmas tree as close to the ground as possible. This will allow you to trim the trunk, if needed, to fit within your room. If you cut it too high up the trunk, it may end up looking too short for the room in which it will stand.
