Step 1
Start the chainsaw on the ground, making sure that you have it secured firmly in place with one hand while cranking it with the other. An unstable surface can lead to injury.

Place the log so that one end is elevated. This is essential in your log cutting technique in order to make sure that as you cut you'll avoid striking the saw against the ground.

Allow the weight of the chainsaw to do as much of the work as possible. Pressing down too quickly on a chainsaw is poor technique and can result in a pinched saw bar or a thrown chain. Make sure you are holding the chainsaw with both hands as you cut.

Cut from underneath a log if the diameter is large and the weight of the log causes it to pinch in against the bar. Cutting from beneath is often an easier technique and less prone to pinching because of gravity's help.
