Things You'll Need:
- Dog toys
- Dog treats
-
Step 1
Arm yourself with your dog's favorite squeak toy and treats. Approach your boxer in a calm manner causing the toy to squeak and getting his interest.
-
Step 2
Avert your eyes, turn sideways or move into her when she jumps for the toy. This will cause her to stop jumping and look at you to see why she is not getting her desired result.
-
Step 3
Ask your boxer to sit when he stops jumping to let him know what behavior you expect from him. When he is in the sit position, reinforce this more respectful behavior by giving him the toy or a small treat and praising him. Keep your praise calm to discourage over excitement and a resurgence of jumping.
-
Step 4
Practice consistency with your boxer by enticing her with the toy again. Each time she jumps ignore her or turn into her to halt the jumping. When she requests the toy by sitting, give her what she wants along with verbal praise.
-
Step 5
End the session after 7 to 8 minutes to keep your boxer from getting bored. Always end on a positive note to keep your dog happily anticipating the next lesson.
